Getting Around Khao
Lak
Much of
southern Thailand - and Khao Lak and Phuket
in particular - are not blessed with good
public transportation systems as you would
find in Bangkok.
Bus
systems do run between the larger cities in
the area, but that won't do you much good
between Baan La On [Khao Lak Town] and Bang
Niang if you want to go out for dinner and a
couple drinks.
As
the Khao Lak area is quite spread out,
people are left with only a few options:
-
Hotel
or resort transport, sometimes free,
sometimes expensive - and their schedule
may not fit yours.
-
Local
songthaews [photo top left] which run at
irregular times and usually stop running
after about 6pm.
-
Hiring a local taxi - which may ask
much higher prices late at night,
particularly if you are going to an
out-of-the-way resort/hotel.
-
Renting a car or motorbike during the
duration of your stay [see the page on
renting a car or motorbike].
-
Walking long distances in the heat - or
- staying close to home.
If you
wish to avoid the transportation problem
altogether, stay in either Bang Niang or
Baan La On (Khao Lak Town) as both areas
have plenty of restaurants and shops within
easy walking distance - and there is plenty
to see just walking around. See the Maps
pages to know what resorts and hotels are
where.
If you
can afford it and are comfortable/familiar
with driving on the left side of the road
consider renting a motorbike or car.
There is a lot to see in the area and the
menu on this website also suggests some
interesting drives that you might consider.
If you are not already an experienced
motorbike driver - don't even think about
driving one here.
(It's not
really as crowded as the scene above - but
don't drive a motorbike if you aren't already skilled)
