Map
of the Bang Niang Beach area of Khao Lak
The Bang Niang Beach area of Khao Lak
is growing rapidly and beginning to rival the main town
area of Baan La On (Khao Lak Town) in terms of
restaurants, resorts, shops and services.
Pre-tsunami the area north of the road
running to the beach was primarily a backpacker area
with inexpensive fan (no A/C) bungalows set back from
the beach and costing very little.
Today we see the beginnings of some
quite upscale resorts - and even some moderately priced
3-4 star resorts taking over the area. The days of
the cheap beach bungalow seem to have passed.
One of the best attractions of the
area is the great number of restaurants - up and down
the the road that runs from the main highway down to the
beach - and along the beach front.
In this area you will also find the
Bang Niang Market (see N-3) which is help on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Saturdays. An opportunity to mingle
with the local folks and even Burmese laborers - this is
the real Thailand with everything from edible bugs to
Burmese posters on sale.
Of some interest in the area is the
Royal Thai Navy boast at N-4 that was washed ashore in
the 2004 tsunami. Look at the map and you can see
the distance this boat is from the sea. A
testament to the power of the sea on Boxing Day 2004.
Come, enjoy Bang Niang!
