Map of the Similan Islands National Park, Thailand

Mu
Koh Similian National Park
is an area of 50kmē off the west coast of Phang-nga in
the Andaman Sea, A group of nine small islands. Because
of the great natural beauty found on the islands and
because of the extensive surrounding coral gardens
beneath the waves it is considered one of the best
diving sites in the world.
The
islands are undeveloped and unspoiled, with a numerous
species of fish, crustaceans and other forms of sea-life
abound. Water clarity and diving are excellent here.
The word "Similan" comes for the Malay term "Sembilan",
which means nine.
From
north to south in order the islands are : Ko Bon, Ko Ba
Ngu, Ko Similan, Ko Pahyoo, Ko Miang (two islands), Ko
Pahyan, Ko Payahng and Ko Hu Yong.
The Similan National Park offers two
different kinds of diving. Along the eastern side diving
consists of gently sloping coral reefs with sandy
patches and the occasional boulder in between.
West side diving is known for its huge
underwater granite boulders with numerous swimthroughs.
The most famous east side dive site is probably East of
Eden, off Island number 7. Elephant head rock is
arguably the most famous west side dive site with a maze
of swimthroughs and the reputation for spin-cycle like
currents running in every direction. |
